The short answer: a birthday tarot reading has three parts. Your birth cards are the one to three Major Arcana cards calculated from your date of birth: they never change and describe who you are. Your year card is calculated the same way from your birthday and the current year: it describes the theme of the year from this birthday to the next. And a birthday spread is a set of cards you pull on (or around) your birthday for the year ahead. All three take about a minute. Here’s how.
| What it is | How long it lasts | |
|---|---|---|
| Birth cards | Your “soul” and “personality” cards from your date of birth | Your whole life |
| Year card | The theme of your personal year, from birthday to birthday | One year |
| Birthday spread | Cards pulled on your birthday for the year ahead | One year |
Step 1: Calculate Your Tarot Birth Cards
This is the method popularised by the tarot author Mary K. Greer, and it’s the one most readers use:
- Add your birth month, day and year as ordinary numbers.
- Add the digits of the total together.
- If the result is 22 or lower, that’s your first birth card. If it’s higher than 22, add its digits again.
- If your card’s number has two digits, add them together to get your second birth card.
Example: born March 14, 1992. 3 + 14 + 1992 = 2009 → 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11 → Justice (XI). Then 1 + 1 = 2 → The High Priestess (II). So this person’s birth cards are Justice and the High Priestess: fairness and intuition, someone who weighs things carefully and trusts their inner voice.
A few notes:
- If your total reduces to 10 or 19, you have three cards: 19 → 10 → 1 gives The Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician.
- A total of exactly 22 is The Fool, paired with the Emperor (2 + 2 = 4).
- If you land on a single digit (1–9), that card is both your soul and personality card. (Your “hidden” teacher card sits in the same group in the table below.)
- The method uses Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11.
The 9 Birth Card Groups and What They Say About You
Every possible result falls into one of nine groups. Find yours:
| Your number | Birth cards | What they say about you |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 10 or 19 | The Magician · Wheel of Fortune · The Sun | A natural initiator. You make things happen, and luck tends to follow your momentum |
| 2, 11 or 20 | The High Priestess · Justice · Judgement | Intuitive and fair-minded. You see what others miss and weigh it honestly |
| 3, 12 or 21 | The Empress · The Hanged Man · The World | Creative and nurturing, with a gift for seeing things from a new angle |
| 4, 13 or 22 | The Emperor · Death · The Fool | A builder who isn’t afraid of change; you create structure and know when to start again |
| 5 or 14 | The Hierophant · Temperance | A teacher and a healer. You find balance and pass on what you know |
| 6 or 15 | The Lovers · The Devil | Magnetic and passionate. Relationships and deep choices shape your life |
| 7 or 16 | The Chariot · The Tower | Driven and brave. You break through obstacles and rebuild stronger |
| 8 or 17 | Strength · The Star | Quiet courage and lasting hope; you inspire and steady other people |
| 9 or 18 | The Hermit · The Moon | Deeply intuitive and reflective, a seeker with a rich inner world |
If Death, the Devil or the Tower is in your group, read it the way tarot readers do: as power, not misfortune. Death is the card of transformation (full meaning here), the Devil of passion and intensity (here), and the Tower of breakthrough.
Step 2: Find Your Year Card for Your Next Birthday
Your year card uses the same calculation, with the year of your current or upcoming birthday in place of your birth year:
Example: the same person, birthday March 14, 2027. 3 + 14 + 2027 = 2044 → 2 + 0 + 4 + 4 = 10 → Wheel of Fortune. From March 14, 2027 to March 14, 2028, their year is about turning points and luck changing in their favour.
Most readers count the year card from birthday to birthday, not January to December. So if your birthday hasn’t come yet this year, last year’s card is still running.
What each year card means
| Year card | The theme of your year |
|---|---|
| 1 The Magician | New beginnings you start yourself; skills come together |
| 2 The High Priestess | Trusting your intuition; a quieter, inward year |
| 3 The Empress | Growth, creativity, love and abundance |
| 4 The Emperor | Building structure, stepping into leadership |
| 5 The Hierophant | Learning, commitment, finding your people or tradition |
| 6 The Lovers | Love and big choices about relationships and values |
| 7 The Chariot | Momentum and wins through determination |
| 8 Strength | Courage, patience, confidence growing from the inside |
| 9 The Hermit | Reflection, study, finding your own answers |
| 10 Wheel of Fortune | Turning points; luck changing in your favour |
| 11 Justice | Decisions, fairness, contracts and balance |
| 12 The Hanged Man | A pause that brings a new perspective |
| 13 Death | Transformation: closing a chapter, starting a new one |
| 14 Temperance | Healing, balance and steady progress |
| 15 The Devil | Passion, and freeing yourself from what holds you back |
| 16 The Tower | Breakthrough: clearing what’s outdated to build something real |
| 17 The Star | Hope, healing and dreams coming back into view |
| 18 The Moon | Intuition, dreams and trusting the process |
| 19 The Sun | Joy, success and visibility; one of the best year cards |
| 20 Judgement | Awakening, a calling, a second chance |
| 21 The World | Completion and celebration; a cycle comes full circle |
| 22 The Fool | A leap of faith into something completely new |

Step 3: Pull a 7-Card Birthday Spread
Your birth cards say who you are, your year card the theme of the year. The birthday spread fills in the detail. Shuffle while thinking about the year ahead, then lay out seven cards:
| Position | Question |
|---|---|
| 1. The year that’s ending | What did this past year teach me? |
| 2. What to leave behind | What am I ready to release on this birthday? |
| 3. The theme of my new year | What is this year really about? |
| 4. Love and relationships | What’s coming in love? |
| 5. Work and money | Where is growth in my work and finances? |
| 6. My hidden gift | What strength will surprise me this year? |
| 7. Birthday advice | What do I most need to remember? |
Reading it: look at position 3 next to your year card. If they agree (say, the Ace of Cups in a Lovers year), that’s the headline of your year. If they seem to conflict, the spread is showing you how the year card will play out.
Want more detail? Pull twelve cards, one for each month from your birthday, or four, one for each season. For other layouts, see three-card spreads, the Celtic Cross and love tarot spreads.
When should you pull birthday cards?
- On your birthday is the tradition.
- Astrologers also use your solar return: the exact moment the Sun returns to the degree it held when you were born, which can fall the day before or after your birthday. Pulling cards then pairs beautifully with a solar return astrology reading.
- Anywhere in your birthday week works if the day itself is busy. The intention matters more than the hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my tarot birth card?
Add your birth month, day and year as numbers (for March 14, 1992: 3 + 14 + 1992 = 2009), then add the digits of the total (2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11). If the result is over 22, add its digits again. That’s your birth card (11 = Justice). If it has two digits, add them for your second card (1 + 1 = 2, The High Priestess).
What is a tarot year card?
The card that describes the theme of your personal year, from one birthday to the next. You calculate it like your birth card, but with the year of your current or upcoming birthday instead of your birth year.
What is my tarot card for 2027?
Add your birth month, your birth day and 2027, then add the digits of the total and reduce to 22 or lower. For example, a March 14 birthday gives 3 + 14 + 2027 = 2044, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 4 = 10: the Wheel of Fortune, a year of turning points.
What is a birthday tarot spread?
A spread you pull on or around your birthday for the year ahead. A popular seven-card version covers the year that’s ending, what to release, the theme of the new year, love, work and money, a hidden gift and birthday advice.
Can you have three tarot birth cards?
Yes. If your total reduces to 19 you have three: The Sun (19), the Wheel of Fortune (1 + 9 = 10) and the Magician (1 + 0 = 1). A total of 10 gives the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician, with the Sun as the third card in the group.
Is it bad if my birth card is Death or the Tower?
Not at all. Birth cards describe strengths. Death as a birth card marks someone with a gift for transformation and new starts; the Tower, someone who breaks through obstacles and rebuilds stronger.
