Key findings
- The typical online psychic charges $4.99 a minute. That is the median listed rate across all 257 readers we audited; the middle half charge between $3.67 and $7.99, and 52% charge $5 or less.
- The “average” price overstates what most people pay. The mean is $6.81/min because a small premium tier pulls it up: the top 10% start at $12.99/min and the highest listed rate is $39.99/min. Quote the median, not the average.
- Keen looks dearest, but compare like with like. Kasamba and Purple Garden share a $4.99 median and Keen’s is $6.53, yet a Keen reader charges the same rate by phone or chat. If you want to talk rather than type, Kasamba’s median voice rate is $9.99.
- Talking costs more than typing. 64% of Kasamba readers and 76% of Purple Garden readers who list both regular prices charge more for voice than chat (median $4.99 → $9.99 on Kasamba). Purple Garden video runs a median 67% above the same reader’s chat rate.
- Mediumship costs the most per minute. Median rates: mediumship $5.45, tarot $4.99, astrology $4.99 a minute — and mediumship and birth-chart sessions also run longer, so they cost more in total.
- Veterans charge more. Readers who have been on their platform for 15 years or more have a median rate of $6.99/min, against $4.99 for those with under 10 years.
- Strong readers start in the middle of the market. Readers at $3.00–$4.99 average 4.48 on our 1–5 audit score, close to the 4.52 of those at $15 and up and up from 4.33 under $3. The premium tier does hold more of the very top scorers (54% score 4.7 or higher), which is worth paying for on one specific, high-stakes question.
- A first reading costs far less than list price. At the $4.99 median, a 20-minute first reading costs $42.42 on Kasamba, $69.80 on Purple Garden and $75.85 on Keen after each new-client offer, against $99.80 at full price.

Listed rate = the first per-minute rate on the reader’s public profile, usually their chat rate. Readers set their own rates and can change them at any time.
The headline is how close the three platforms are: Kasamba and Purple Garden share the same median, and the spread inside each platform is far wider than the spread between them. Picking the right reader matters more than picking the “cheap” site.

How much a reading costs by length
Most people think in sessions, not minutes. Here is what a reading costs at standard rates for the price points that matter: the bottom quarter of readers, the typical (median) reader, the top quarter and the top 10%.

A single clear question takes about 10 minutes; a relationship reading or a tarot spread usually 15–20; mediumship sittings and birth-chart readings 30 or more. Telling the reader up front how many minutes you have keeps the session, and the bill, on track.

Half of all readers sit below $5 a minute, and three quarters below $8. The premium tier is real but small.

Per minute, the types are close; the real difference is length. A tarot question fits in 20 minutes, while a mediumship sitting or a full birth-chart reading needs about 30, so plan a bigger budget for those. Each type has its own detailed price guide: tarot, medium and astrology.
Chat, phone or video: the format changes the price

On Kasamba and Purple Garden the same reader often charges more to talk than to type, and on Purple Garden video sits above both. If you are comfortable typing, chat is usually the cheapest way to reach a given reader, and on Kasamba every chat is saved so you can re-read it later. Does paying more get you a better reader?
Up to a point. Average audit scores rise from the budget tier to the typical tier, then level off:

So the jump that matters is out of the very cheapest band, not into the most expensive one. Premium readers are more often among the very top scorers, which is why they can be worth it for one important question. For most readings, a well-reviewed reader in the $3.67–$7.99 middle of the market is the sweet spot.
Experience explains much of the premium. Readers who publish their start year show a clear veteran tier:

A higher rate usually buys a longer track record and a busier queue, not guaranteed accuracy. The quickest way to judge any reader is still a specific question in the first few minutes, which is exactly what new-client offers are for.

In-person readers usually charge a flat fee for a 30–60 minute session, so the price per minute is often lower, but you pay for the whole slot. Online, you pay only for the minutes you use and can choose from hundreds of readers, which makes a short, focused reading much cheaper.
The hidden costs nobody tells you about
The slow reader. A $2/min reader who spends ten minutes on greetings and clarifying questions costs as much as a $5/min reader who answers in four. Judge value per minute, not price per minute.
Session length. A real relationship or mediumship reading rarely takes five minutes. Plan for 15–30 minutes, which is why a “cheap” reading often ends up at $50–$150.
The upsell. The predatory side of the industry makes its money on follow-ups: a “blockage” that needs clearing, a ritual, another session “to finish.” Any reader who sells you the next session before this one has proven itself is pricing you, not reading you. How to budget so you don’t overspend
- Set a ceiling before you book, and tell the reader how many minutes you have.
- Bring one specific question. Ten focused minutes beat thirty wandering ones.
- Use the first-session offer to test, not to get a full reading. If the reader is specific in the first few minutes, you have found someone worth booking again.
- Keep the transcript (Kasamba saves chats) and check predictions when their windows pass. That habit tells you which readers are worth their rate.
Methodology
- Sample: 257 public advisor profiles, reviewed one by one: 117 on Kasamba, 86 on Purple Garden and 54 on Keen, audited between April and October 2026. Each reader has a full review on this site.
- Listed rate: the first per-minute rate shown on the reader’s public profile (for most readers, their chat rate). Where a profile shows a promotional rate first, that is the rate recorded, because it is what a new client pays.
- Chat, voice and video rates: recorded only where the profile lists them separately; Keen profiles show one rate for every format. The format comparison uses regular rates only, so profiles whose rates are labelled promotional are left out of it.
- Statistics: medians and quartiles (lower quartile = 25th percentile, upper quartile = 75th) use linear interpolation, the same method as Excel’s QUARTILE.INC. “Average” is the arithmetic mean.
- Reading types: the practices each reader lists on their profile; a reader can count in several types.
- Experience: years since the start date the reader publishes on their profile (225 of the 257 do).
- Audit score: our editorial 1–5 score from our published method, set before any affiliate consideration.
- First-reading costs: each platform’s new-client offer applied exactly as published (Kasamba: 3 free minutes, then 50% off up to $50; Purple Garden: $30 credit; Keen: first 5 minutes for $1).
- Limits: rates change often and promotions come and go; the figures describe listed prices, not what every client paid. Taxes and payment fees are excluded. Mysticsense and SpiritualBlossom figures come from separate platform reviews and are not part of the 257-reader sample.
