Questions to Ask a Psychic: What Works, What Wastes Your Money

The question you ask a psychic determines the quality of the reading. Here are the questions that get useful, specific answers — and the ones that guarantee you leave disappointed.

The quality of a psychic reading is decided before the reader says a word. It is decided by the question you bring — and most people bring questions that guarantee a mediocre session. I have sat through enough readings, good and bad, to recognize the pattern: the client arrives with “is he coming back” or “will I get the job,” the reader is forced into a guess, and both parties leave the session knowing it could have been more. The reader knows it. The client knows it. The money is gone either way.

The fix is not finding a better psychic. The fix is asking better questions. Here is what works, what wastes your money, and what you should never ask at all.

The Core Rule: Ask About Energy, Not Outcomes

Every useful question shares one property: it asks about the shape of the situation, not the outcome. “Will he come back” has one possible answer and no reasoning. “What is the energy around this reconciliation, and what is standing in its way” invites a reader to perceive — to describe the pattern, the timing, the obstacles, the motivations. The first question produces a guess. The second produces a reading.

This is the single most valuable thing you can learn about the industry, and it applies to every category: relationships, career, money, family. Reframe every yes-or-no question into an energy question, and you will see an immediate difference in the specificity of what you get back.

Fifteen Questions That Get Real Answers

Use these as templates, adapted to your situation. Notice what they share: they are open, they invite perception, and they ask about things a reader can actually engage with.

  1. What am I not seeing about this situation?
  2. What is the energy around this person’s real intentions toward me?
  3. What is the timing energy here — when does this situation want to resolve, and what can I do in the window?
  4. What pattern in my life is this situation repeating, and how do I break it?
  5. What is the root of the block I keep hitting in this area of my life?
  6. What do I need to know about the person I am dealing with that I do not know?
  7. What is the lesson or purpose of this connection, regardless of its outcome?
  8. What action would the energy support me taking right now?
  9. What am I holding onto that is costing me?
  10. What is the true state of this relationship/job/decision — not the story I am telling myself about it?
  11. What should I focus on that I have been avoiding?
  12. What is coming toward me in the next season that I should prepare for?
  13. What is the energy of the people around me that I am not registering?
  14. What would this situation look like six months from now if I stay on my current path?
  15. What is the one thing I most need to hear right now, even if it is hard?

The fifteenth question is the sleeper. It gives the reader permission to deliver the thing you actually need rather than the thing you asked for, and the best readers in my testing have consistently produced their most valuable work in response to it.

What Wastes Your Money

Three question patterns reliably produce disappointing sessions, and avoiding them will save you more money than any platform comparison.

The certainty question — “will it happen,” “when will it happen,” “is it yes or no” — forces the reader into a guess. The answer will arrive with false confidence, because a reader who says “I don’t know” to a paying client is a reader who will not get a repeat booking. You are not getting information; you are getting a coin flip with spiritual packaging.

The backstory dump — reciting your entire history in the first minute — burns your billable time and gives the reader everything they need to cold read you. The correct protocol is minimal information: the names, the situation in two sentences, and the question. Let the reader demonstrate unprompted specificity, then confirm. My guide on spotting fake psychics explains why this protocol is your best defense.

The cross-examination — asking the same question three ways to test consistency, or challenging every answer — produces a defensive reader and a wasted session. You cannot verify a reading by interrogating it; you verify it by waiting for the prediction windows to pass. Which brings me to the third pattern.

What You Should Never Ask

Three things should never come out of your mouth in a session.

Anything medical, legal, or financial that a licensed professional should answer. A psychic who claims to diagnose, prescribe, or guarantee investment returns is committing fraud, and asking invites it. My career and money reading guide covers why this category attracts the worst scams.

Anything about harming or controlling another person — spells, manipulation, “making him love me.” Legitimate readers refuse these; the ones who do not are the ones you should never pay. The distinction between guidance and manipulation is the ethical line of the entire industry, and my guide on relationships and third parties addresses it directly.

And the trap question — asking about a deceased person when you know the details, or testing a prediction you already know the answer to. Mediumship and prediction cannot be verified in real time, and a session designed to catch the reader lying will produce a defensive, useless session. Verification happens in the weeks after, by keeping records and checking the windows. This guide covers what to do when a prediction misses.

How to Bring Your Question: The Preparation Protocol

Write the question down before the session, and keep it to one primary question plus one follow-up. Two questions are a focused session; five are a scattered one. This sounds obvious, but it is the single most common failure I observe in first-time readings — and my preparation guide was written around exactly this problem.

When the session connects, state the situation in two sentences, ask the question, and then be quiet. The silence after a good question is where the reading happens. Most people fill it with clarifying context, and every word of context is both billable time and ammunition for a cold reader.

The Bottom Line

The difference between a life-changing reading and a wasted session is almost never the reader. It is the question. Ask about energy, not outcomes; give minimal backstory; refuse to interrogate; and bring one focused question written down in advance. Do that, and you will be in the top ten percent of clients — which is exactly the client the best readers prioritize.

If you are new to this, start with what a psychic reading is and my first reading guide, then practice the question protocol on a platform trial offer where the testing is cheap.
